Who is Homelander? Is He a Hero or a Villain?

Several articles are circulating on the internet recently comparing DC’s Superman and The Boys’ Homelander. Who is Homelander? Is he a hero or a villain? If you are both DC and Marvel comics fan, it is time to know about The Boys’ universe, starting with Homelander.

Who is Homelander?

Homelander is the most powerful member and the leader of The Seven. He is also dubbed as one of the strongest characters in The Boys universe.

Homelander was first introduced as an infant alien that landed on earth, pretty much like Superman; it is far from the truth. Homelander’s back story was a bit darker than Superman’s.

Homelander was born from a mentally challenged woman who was killed right after he was born. When he was a fetus, Homelander was injected with an extreme amount of Compound V – a powerful chemical compound form by the Nazi government injected into the youngs. He spent most of his young life in a secret lab, chained down with a hydrogen bomb, keeping him from escaping.

In the lab, he developed superhuman abilities such as:

  • Flight
  • Invulnerability
  • Increased strength
  • Super hearing
  • X-ray vision
  • Laser vision

Additionally, it is made clear that he can be compared to Superman as he can also fly at the speed of Mach 1 (767 miles per hour), and he is bulletproof. Check this comparison between Superman and Homelander and find out more.

Is Homelander a hero or a villain?

Homelander is neither a hero nor a villain. On the second thought, he could be both a hero and a villain.

During the 9/11 attack, The Seven (a parody of Justice League) got involved. However, it made the situation worse, which caused the death of a large number of people. In several articles, Homelander is depicted as a douche bag, megalomaniacal, and brutal superhero wanna-be.

Homelander can’t be considered a hero. He raped Billy Butcher’s wife, Becca, who then carried and had given birth to a superhuman baby. However, giving birth to Homelander’s clone son, killed her. As a result, Billy Butcher killed the baby. And because of this incident, Billy sought after Homelander to kill him, making him Homelander’s archnemesis.

Start of Dark Events

In issue #40, The Boys received incriminating photos of Homelander seemingly a part of a murdering scene, involved in necrophilia, even cannibalism. These photos brought him distraught, especially when he has no recollection of doing such horrific acts, even raping Billy’s wife.

Due to these photos and blackmailing events, Homelander’s insanity and sadism grew. Then, he started planning to go against the government through coup d’etat; a superhero uprising. He and his false heroes went on a full-scale attack on the White House. They killed other superheroes that went against him.

The Truth

After killing the president, Homelander learned that Black Noir was his clone. Black Noir was created by Vought-America to kill Homelander if ever he went out of the line. Unfortunately, Black Noir was far more cruel and brutal than him. During this confrontation, it was revealed that it was Black Noir in the photos and not him. And it was Black Noir who raped Becca.

Distraught with such revelation, he tried to kill Black Noir. Unfortunately, Homelander lost the battle but leaving Black Noir severely injured. Billy Butcher, who was present during the revelation, killed Black Noir, avenging his wife.

Final Thoughts

Homelander is neither a hero nor a villain but a manipulated superhuman.
